Kat’s Piece #6: Fukushima Ghost Towns

Kat worked with NPR photographer Claire Harbage and the ultra-talented NPR Visuals team to publish a hauntingly beautiful piece about what recovery from disaster means. What she discovered? Resilience, reinvention and regret.

Check out the digital piece here, including full credits.

Kat interviews professor and surfer Hideki Okumoto as he measures a favorite surfing beach in Fukushima for radiation levels. He’s been independently checking the radiation levels of this beach for years in an effort to bring back the huge surfing community that was here before 2011.
